Hawai'i Select girls win all-star basketball event

McKinley High sophomore Chelsea Sato scored 14 points as Hawai'i Select defeated the Compton (Calif.) Lady Swoops, 54-45, yesterday in the girls All-Star Division championship game of the Slam-N-Jam National Basketball Championships in Las Vegas.
Kalaheo High's Shanadee Canon added 12 points for Hawai'i Select, which finished the tournament with a 6-0 record.
Hawai'i Select coach Chico Furtado said the championship game was "physical," and his team "pressed the whole game" as it did throughout the tournament.
Fifteen teams from four states competed in the All-Star Division, the highest-rated of seven girls divisions in the tournament.
"Five of our 12 players will be sophomores and only three will be seniors," said Furtado, the Kalaheo head coach. "It was fun to see them evolve and improve throughout the tournament."
Hawai'i Select beat the Seattle Magic, 64-57, in a morning semifinal. Iolani's Keilyn Fujioka scored 16 points, Sato added 12 and Nicole Fu of Maryknoll had 10.

O'ahu unbeaten in Ripken tourney
Jarrett Arakawa and Landon Yoshikawa hit first-inning home runs to help the O'ahu Stars defeat Spanish Springs, Nev., on Friday night in the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regionals for 12-year-olds at Fallon, Nev.
The final score was not available, but O'ahu won its first two games by a combined score of 25-0.
Elsewhere in Hawai'i youth baseball:
Tri Valley (Northern California) defeated Hawai'i, 14-10, Friday in the Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regionals for 13-year-olds at Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mililani defeated Hilo, 12-7, yesterday in the PONY Bronco (ages 11 to 12) West Zone Tournament at Maui.
GOLF
Isobe propels U.S. to World Deaf title
Hawai'i's Gerald Isobe shot a final-round 77 on Friday to help the U.S. men win the 5th Biennial World Deaf Golf Championships at Stockholm, Sweden.
Isobe, who coaches the Punahou School junior varsity, finished with a three-round total of 235 to place seventh out of 70 golfers.
England was second and Scotland third in the 14-country field.
Kaneko fourth entering final round
Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko shot a second straight 5-over-par 77 yesterday and was in fourth place in the girls 16 to 18 division at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Kaneko, the first-round leader, has a three-round total of 11-over 227. She is four strokes behind leader Juliana Beatriz Murcia Ortiz of Colombia.
Xyra Suyetsugu is the only other golfer from Hawai'i to qualify for the final round of play. She is 17th in the 37-player final field after a 79236.
VOLLEYBALL
Stanley helps USA men beat Olympic champs
Hawai'i's Clay Stanley scored a match-high 19 points to lead the visiting USA men's team to a 3-0 victory over defending Olympic gold medalist Serbia and Montenegro Friday night at the Pre-Olympic Tournament.
Stanley had 17 kills, one block and one ace in the 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 victory.
USA women defeated in World Grand Prix
Simona Rinieri scored a match-high 24 points as host Italy defeated the USA women's team, 3-1, Friday night in the World Grand Prix.
Rinieri had 20 kills and four blocks in Italy's 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19 victory.
Nancy Metcalf led the U.S. with 17 points on 17 kills.
