Sex offender escapes in Hilo

Big Island police are looking for a 29-year-old escapee from the Kulani Correctional Facility in Hilo.
Officials learned Joshua Reed was missing from the facility at 6 a.m. yesterday. Police said Reed was last seen at a head count at 3:55 p.m. Saturday.
Reed is described as being 5 feet 9, weighing about 165 pounds, with green eyes and dirty-blond hair. Police said that he was serving time for a sex offense.
Anyone with information on Reed's whereabouts is asked to call officer Dean Uyetake of the South Hilo Patrol at (808) 961-2213 or the police non-emergency number at (808) 935-3311.
Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 in Hilo or (808) 329-8181 in Kona.
Two hurt as truck goes into gulch
A man and a woman were injured yesterday during a single-truck crash in Laupahoehoe.
The pickup truck went over a guard rail on Highway 19 at about 10 a.m. and fell 15 feet into a gulch.
The man, who had been driving, and the woman were taken to Hilo Medical Center by ambulance.
Event promotes charity walk
A kickoff breakfast will take place Aug. 25 for those interested in helping with the second annual Walk for Hunger, a benefit for the River of Life Mission that is planned for October.
More than 150 people are expected to participate in the walk, scheduled for Oct. 30 at the Magic Island end of Ala Moana Beach Park. Money raised through pledges will go toward helping the hungry and homeless.
The breakfast will give the public an opportunity to learn more about the mission and the walk, including tips on how to recruit teams. It will be held at Longhi's restaurant at Ala Moana Center. Registration and breakfast are at 7 a.m. A program starts at 7:30 a.m. Call 524-7656, extension 222, for reservations.
Recyling project on Saturday
A community recycling project to benefit Kaimuki High School, Kapahulu Community Center and Makiki Library will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kaimuki High School parking lot.
The public can bring recyclables to the school, where local businesses will collect them and donate the proceeds.
Recyclable products wanted include scrap metal, appliances, auto parts, beams, bicycles, newspaper, cardboard, beverage containers (plastic, glass, aluminum), old tires and green waste.

Legislator to host meetings
State Rep. David Pendleton, R-49th (Maunawili, Enchanted Lake, Kane'ohe), will host three town hall meetings this month at 7 p.m: Aug. 25 at Enchanted Lake Elementary School in Kailua, Aug. 26 at Rev. Benjamin Parker Elementary School and Aug. 29 at Samuel Wilder King Intermediate School, both in Kane'ohe.
