O'AHU BRIEFS
More showers expected today

Advertiser Staff

What's left of tropical depression Darby will pass through the state today, bringing more showers and the possibility of flooding.

A flash-flood watch issued yesterday will remain in effect until 4 p.m. today, said National Weather Service meteorologist Bob Burke. A flash-flood watch means flooding is possible, but not imminent.

Burke said the storm remnants should bring rain, but little wind through tonight. Yesterday, rain fell over most of the state, but there were no reports of major flooding, he said.

The weather should begin to improve tomorrow and Thursday, but could get a little wet again beginning Friday, Burke said.

Workshop set on watershed

The Hawaii Nature Center will sponsor an Aug. 11 workshop to promote the Ala Wai Watershed Improvement Project.

The workshop is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hawai'i Tokai International College, 2241 Kapi'olani Blvd.

The free event will help community groups, nonprofits and individuals seeking money for projects that lead to water quality improvements or watershed stewardship in the Ala Wai Watershed.

Issues related to the regulations and permitting processes that often undermine the success of financing proposals will be discussed.

For reservations, call Ramsay Taum at the Hawaii Nature Center by Aug. 9 at 955-0100, ext. 27, or e-mail ramsay@hawaiinaturecenter.org.

Board to honor late donor

The Kuli'ou'ou/Kalani Iki Neighborhood Board will present a certificate of appreciation to the late Chip Higgins, a resident who donated money so the board could continue holding its monthly meetings at the 'Aina Haina Public Library.

The recognition will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the 'Aina Haina Public Library, 5246 Kalaniana'ole Highway.

The library had been the neighborhood board's home for almost 20 years before new fees threatened to force it to move elsewhere.

Higgins, a retired Navy officer who also worked on the development of alternative energy with Hawaiian Electric Co., died July 25 at age 79.

Before he died, he donated money to the board so it could pay for the library's public meeting room and staff fees.
