ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Healthy babies honored

Advertiser Staff

Alika Alan Almaraz, 2, of Mililani, son of Dana and Anthony Almaraz, was crowned the 51st Meadow Gold Healthy Baby of O'ahu on Friday, making him the first boy in many years to take home the title. Nearly 400 toddlers ages 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 competed. The tots are judged on physical appearance, healthiness and personality.

Second place was awarded to Tiffany Agena, 2, of Pearl City, daughter of Kimberly and John Agena. Third-place honors went to Donovan K. Nacapuy, 2, of Pearl City, son of Cheryl M. Kapua and Ronald L. Nacapuy.

Seeking shut-eye for infants — and parents

Here are suggestions from American Baby magazine on how to get a baby to sleep through the night:
  • Develop a bedtime routine, such as a bath, a song and a cuddle.
  • Do a sound check. Some babies sleep better with noise, such as a fan.
  • Keep baby in the dark. Infants aren't afraid of the dark, and light might keep them awake.
  • Make sure baby's room is comfortable — not too hot or too cold.
  • Try a swaddle. Infants often sleep better if they are snugly swaddled.

Final word

Ken Jennings

Craig Kilborn | host of "The Late, Late Show" talking about "Jeopardy!" champion Ken Jennings, pictured, who won 38 straight episodes to end the season:

" 'Jeopardy' writers are using the summer to write questions to stump Ken Jennings. So far, they've come up with one category: girl parts."
