O'ahu in Ripken Series

Advertiser Staff

Jarrett Arakawa struck out nine in four innings as the O'ahu Stars defeated Visalia (Calif.), 9-1, yesterday in the championship game of the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional for ages 12 and under at Fallon, Nev.

Arakawa, who also batted 2 for 3, was named the tournament MVP as he led O'ahu to the World Series at Aberdeen, Md., starting Aug. 10.

Jordan Oshiro went 3 for 4, including a triple, and Keenan Shigematsu and Landon Yoshikawa each had two hits. Shigematsu had three RBIs and Yoshikawa a two-run homer in earning all-tournament honors.

Arakawa worked four shutout innings — striking out the side in the second and third — before yielding to Chris Chung.

"When his curve ball is on, that's fortunate for us," O'ahu manager Gerald Oda said of his left-handed starter.

"I was surprised," Arakawa said of his dominating performance. "In the game before that (when O'ahu beat Visalia, 3-2, in the quarterfinals), it looked like they would hit me good."
