Tennis players from Hawai'i earn honors

 •  Aztecs' Cuadra in it for the long run

Eight college women's tennis players from Hawai'i high schools have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athletes.

They are:

Division I

  • Stephanie Mathews (Punahou of Honolulu) of Dartmouth.
  • Tracie Chong (Iolani '01 of Hawai'i Kai) of Rice.
  • Nicole Sakai (Pearl City '03) of University of the Pacific (Calif.).
  • Erin Hoe (Mililani '00) of Washington.

Division II

  • Allison Ishii (Iolani '02 of Honolulu) of UC San Diego.
  • Jenna Ishii (Iolani '02 of Honolulu) of UC San Diego.

Division III

  • Lauren Matsushita (Baldwin '01 of Wailuku) of Redlands (Calif.).
  • Erin Hiranaga (University '01 of Palolo Valley) of Redlands (Calif.).

To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade-point average of at least 3.50, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.

Football

Brigham Young senior defensive back Aaron Francisco (Kahuku '01 of La'ie) is one of 29 players on the "Watch List" for the Jim Thorpe Award. The award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate defensive back.



Softball

Brigham Young first baseman Ianeta Le'i (Iolani '02 of Mililani) was named an Easton All-American honorable mention selection.

Le'i earned Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, All-MWC and second-team NFCA West All-Region awards as a sophomore.
