'Mouse' Davis to become UH football assistant coach

Advertiser Staff

Darrel "Mouse" Davis has been hired as the University of Hawai'i's assistant coach in charge of special teams, head coach June Jones announced today on the school's Web site.

Davis, who is best known as the innovator of the run-and-shoot offense, replaces Tyson Helton, who left earlier in the year to take a similar position at the University of Memphis.

Davis, 71, was the head coach of the 2004 San Diego Riptide of the arenafootball2 league that finished tied for second in the West Division with the Hawaiian Islanders.

Davis and Jones have worked together on the several coaching staffs, including stints with USFL's Houston Gamblers (1984) and Denver Gold (1985), and the NFL's Detroit Lions (1989-1990) and Atlanta Falcons (1994-96). Jones also played for Davis at Portland State.

Davis arrives Sunday, the first day that the Warriors report to camp.
