Top seeds advance in Kailua doubles tennis

Top seeds Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen beat No. 5 Christopher Ma and Malino Oda, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles last night.

Bruggemann and Chen will face No. 4 Stefan Pampulov and Jan Axel Triber in a semifinal tonight at 7:15. Pampulov and Triber advanced Wednesday.

Also advancing last night were No. 2 seeds Ikaika Jobe and Bradley Lum-Tucker, who beat No. 6 Chanon Alcon and Gregg Takata, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 3 seeds Hong Tae Kim and Wei-Yu Su, who beat No. 7 Jay Grollman and Erik Sandblom, 6-1, 6-3.

Jobe and Lum-Tucker will play Kim and Su tonight, starting at 6.



BASEBALL

Babe Ruth 14s rout Southern California

Harrison Ishida batted 5 for 5 to lead a 28-hit attack as Hawai'i beat Southern California, 22-5, yesterday in the Babe Ruth Southwest Regional for 14-year-olds at Murray, Utah.

Josh Bninski had four hits and three RBIs, and Matt Suiter and Zach Kometani each added three hits and three RBIs for Hawai'i, which plays either Utah or Arizona tomorrow.

Pearl City Juniors top Southern California

Kamuela Perry-Chong and Bryson Nakamura teamed on a seven-hitter, and Ryno Acosta drove in two runs as Pearl City beat Southern California, 5-0, yesterday in the Little League Junior (ages 13-14) Western Regional at Forest Grove, Ore.

Pearl City plays Oregon today.



SOFTBALL

Mililani Prep sweeps at 18-under nationals

Mililani Prep won its first two games to capture its pool at the ASA Junior Olympic Nationals for ages 18 and under at Clovis, Calif.

Sarah Weisskopf and Tina Noga teamed to pitch Mililani Prep to a 1-0 victory over the Fort Worth Bat Busters Tuesday. Valana Aloy Manuma drove in the game's only run.

Also on Tuesday, Mililani Prep beat the Minnesota Irish, 9-0, behind the combined one-hit pitching of Weisskopf, Noga and Allycia Watanabe. Noga also batted 3 for 3.

Guava Jam eliminated at 12-under nationals

Panthers Gold of California eliminated Guava Jam of Mililani, 4-2, yesterday at the ASA Junior Olympic Nationals for ages 12 and under at Moline, Ill.

The mayor of Moline went to the Guava Jam's hotel later last night to personally thanked the team for its sportsmanship.

On Wednesday, Guava Jam lost to the California Tornadoes, 5-4, in the double-elimination tournament.

Holomua takes two at 10-under nationals

Holomua won both games in extra innings yesterday in the winner's bracket of the ASA Junior Olympic Nationals for ages 10 and under at Tulsa, Okla.

Holomua defeated Diamond Dreamers (Ill.), 2-0, and Murphy Cander Flames (Ga.), 4-3. Both games were scheduled for seven innings but went eight innings.

In the first game, Maycee Moe doubled home Luana Kaululaau to break a scoreless game. Kahea Taniguchi then singled Moe home, allowing Pitisi Tualau to earn the complete-game victory.

In the second game, Holomua tied it with two runs in the seventh and won it on Taniguchi's walk-off double in the eighth.

Holomua will play the Texas Trouble today.



GOLF

Ex-Warrior Kodama 16th at amateur event

Matt Kodama, a former University of Hawai'i golfer, shot par-71 and was tied for 16th after the third round of the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship in Eugene, Ore.

Kodama, of Las Vegas, was at 2-over 215, 11 strokes behind leader Michael Putnam of University Place, Wash.

Casey Watabu, of Kapa'a, Kaua'i, shot 3-over 74 and was tied for 26th at 5-over 218.



CORRECTION

Keli'ikipi must do 40 hours of service

University of Hawai'i senior running back West Keli'ikipi, who was reinstated by the school Wednesday, must perform 40 hours of community service during the 2004 fall semester. The number of hours reported in yesterday's Advertiser was incorrect.
