Passing storm will be milder than last

The remnants of a Pacific storm will bring passing showers to all Hawaiian islands this weekend, but the weather is not expected to be as severe as the rain earlier in the week.

The National Weather Service said showers are expected to continue through today and drift away sometime tomorrow.

"We're still expecting more rain than usual through the weekend, but nothing as heavy as the previous system," forecaster Norman Hui said yesterday. Trade winds should be in the 10 to 20 mph range, he said.

Yesterday the city canceled this weekend's Sunset on the Beach in Waikiki because of the chance of bad weather.

Sunset on the Beach will be held next week at Mai'li Beach Park along the Leeward Coast, city officials said.

The passing weather system is expected to raise surf on east-facing shores of O'ahu to as high as 8 feet today. The swell is expected to decline rapidly by Sunday, the weather service said.

This weekend's rains come on the heels of a storm that dumped 8 inches of rain on parts of the island earlier this week.
