Top seeds in final of Kailua doubles

The top two seeds advanced to the final of the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles tennis tournament with semifinal victories last night.

Top seeds Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen beat the fourth-seeded team of Stefan Pampulov and Jan Axel Triber, 6-4, 7-6 (8).

Bruggemann and Chen will take on second seeds Ikaika Jobe and Bradley-Lum Tucker, who defeated third seeds Hong Tae King and Wei Yu Su, 6-3, 6-3.

The championship match starts tonight at 6.

In the second semifinal, Pampulov and Triber led 5-3 and had four set points. But Bruggemann and Chen rallied to tie at 6-all to force the tiebreaker.

Holua Resort Tennis Club's grand opening

Holua Resort Tennis Club will celebrate its grand opening Aug. 15, starting at 9 a.m. The public is invited to a tennis "carnival."

There will be clinics, demo rackets, round-robin competition and other games and prizes, along with a TennisCize exhibition. A light lunch will be served.

Holua has 11 newly resurfaced courts, including a stadium court and seven lighted courts.

Watabu ties for 16th in Pacific Coast Amateur

Casey Watabu of Kapa'a, Kaua'i, shot a 2-under 69 yesterday to finish tied for 16th at the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.

Watabu, a senior at the University of Nevada, shot his best round of the four-day tournament to finish at 3-over 287. Michael Putnam sank a birdie on the second hole of a three-way playoff to win. Putnam (73), of University Place, Wash., Andrew Martin (68), of Melbourne, Australia, and Spencer Levin (70), of Elk Grove, Calif., finished tied at 7-under 277.

Matt Kodama, a former University of Hawai'i golfer from Las Vegas, shot an 8-over 79 and finished tied for 30th at 294.



Akau's opening 71 tops Army Invitational

Christian Akau shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday for a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Army Invitational at Leilehua Golf Course.

Jarett Hamamoto, Kevin Shimomura and Kramer Aoki were one shot back at 72.

Defending champion Brandan Kop, Christopher Tanabe, Garrett Hayashi and Christopher Piech were at 73.

The championship, senior and C flights will play their second round at Kalakaua today. The A and B flights will play at Leilehua.

Vulcan Hall of Fame accepting nominations

The nomination deadline for the 13th Annual City Bank/Vulcan Athletic Hall of Fame Induction, which recognizes athletes and community members who have contributed to the legacy of University of Hawai'i-Hilo athletics, is Aug. 31.

Forms are available at the UHH athletic department office or by calling 974-7606.

The inauguration luncheon will be held Saturday, Feb. 5.

To qualify as an athlete, the nominees must have completed their eligibility at UH-Hilo and finished competing at the end of the spring 1999 season. Exceptions are made for inability to complete because of physical or medical reasons.

Honolulu's Pate wins Masters steeplechase

Honolulu's Ron Pate, 57, won a gold medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase yesterday at the USA Track & Field Masters Championship at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.

Pate, competing in the men's 55 division, finished in 12 minutes, 43.20 seconds.



VOLLEYBALL

St. Anthony girls' team gets academic honors

The St. Anthony girls volleyball team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, the only team from Hawai'i — high school or college — to earn the honor.

The 2003 Trojans earned the distinction by maintaining a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.



YOUTH BASEBALL

Taipei beats Maui in PONY Bronco series

Wu Tung-Jung struck out 11 to lead Chinese Taipei to a 12-2 victory over the Maui All-Stars in the PONY Bronco (ages 11 and 12) World Series on Thursday at Monterey, Calif.

Maui plays Pacific Grove, Calif., today in the double-elimination tournament.

Wu allowed two unearned runs and three hits for the complete-game (five innings) victory.



Pearl City rips Oregon in Little League Jrs.

Alika Pruett struck out 12 batters and John Abreu struck out three in relief on a combined three-hitter as Pearl City beat Oregon, 11-1, yesterday in the Little League Juniors (age 13-14) Western Regional at Forest Grove, Oregon.

Ryno Acosta batted 3 for 4 and Pearl City scored 10 runs in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie.

Pearl City plays Arizona today at 11 a.m. (HST).
