Swart and Darling win swim series overall titles

Ashley Swart, a 2002 Kaiser High graduate from Hawai'i Kai, won the final leg of the North Shore Swim Series yesterday to capture the overall women's title.

Swart, who will be a junior at the University of San Diego in the fall, finished the 2.4-mile North Shore Challenge in 42 minutes, 11 seconds.

It was Swart's third victory in the four-part ocean swim series.

Noa Sakamoto, a 2004 Punahou School graduate headed for Stanford University, won yesterday's race from Ehukai Beach Park to Waimea Bay in 39:17.

Quinton Darling, who placed third in 41:31, captured the overall men's title.



TRACK AND FIELD

Sprinter Pedrina earns silver at Hershey meet

Jeffrey Pedrina, of Kailua Track Club, clocked 13.52 seconds yesterday to place second in the 100-meter dash of the 11-12 age division at the Hershey Youth Program National Track and Field Meet in Hershey, Pa.

Four others from Hawai'i placed in the top 10. They were:

* Sanoe Aina (girls 13-14), Crestview Playground Parks & Recreation, placed fourth in the softball throw with 180 feet, 10 inches.

* Kaenen Aukai Akau (boys 9-10), Big Island Parks & Recreation Honoka'a, placed fifth in the 50 meters with 7.8 seconds.

* Blaine Bastatas (boys 13-14), Kane'ohe Wildcats, placed seventh in the 100 meters with 13.05 seconds.

* Jace Saplan (boys 13-14), Hilo Parks & Recreation, placed ninth in the standing long jump with 7 feet, 10 inches.



GOLF

Akau opens 5-shot lead in Army Invitational

Christian Akau shot a 3-under-par 67 yesterday at the Kalakaua Golf Course to open a five-stroke lead after two rounds in the championship flight of the Army Invitational.

Akau has a 36-hole total of 138 after opening with a 1-under 71 at Leilehua Golf Course on Friday.

Defending champion Brandan Kop (70) and Ryan Perez (69) were at 143 heading into today's final round at Leilehua.

Other flight leaders are: Kendyl Ko (seniors) at 146, John Matias (A) at 146, Fredrick Denault (B) at 158, Larry Watanabe (C) at 160.



YOUTH SOFTBALL

Mililani Prep ousted at 18-under nationals

Mililani Prep was eliminated from the ASA Junior Olympic Nationals for ages 18 and under Friday at Clovis, Calif.

Mililani beat the Phoenix Mustangs, 8-0, in the morning, but lost to the California Haze, 2-0, in the afternoon.

It was Mililani's second loss in the 116-team, double-elimination tournament.
