Trades may offer comfort in muggy forecast

By Peter Boylan

The wet weather that was supposed to hit the Islands over the weekend never materialized, but residents can expect steamy conditions throughout the week.

According to the National Weather Service, the remnants of Tropical Depression 6-E passed through the state harmlessly.

Henry Lau, a forecaster with the National Weather Service, said the system already was weak when it arrived here, unlike the leftovers from Hurricane Darby that produced heavy rain Aug. 4.

"It (Tropical Depression 6-E) was quite weak when it came upon us," said Lau. "It produced some showers for the windward and mountain areas, but nothing compared to Darby."

On Thursday, the city canceled this weekend's Sunset on the Beach events in Waikiki because of the chance of bad weather. Sunset on the Beach will be held next week at Ma'ili Beach Park along the Leeward Coast, city officials said.

Lau said to expect trade winds from Monday through Saturday, moving at about 15 to 20 miles per hour.

Some trade showers can be expected, but the daytime temperature will stay between 85 and 90 degrees.

"The trades are back, so it may give us a little bit of comfort," said Lau. "It will still be warm."
