Kihei wins game, loses tiebreaker

Jordan Negrini pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 to lead Kihei, Maui, to a 1-0 victory over Murrayhill, Ore., in the Little League Majors (ages 11 to 12), but lost a tiebreaker to advance to the championship round.

Kihei, Murrayhill and Redmond, Wash., finished the Northwest Regional pool play 2-2 on Saturday. But Murrayhill won the three-team tiebreaker with a lower runs-per-defensive inning ratio. Redmond also advanced because it held the head-to-head tiebreaker over Kihei.

Negrini didn't walk a batter in the six-inning game at San Bernardino, Calif. Murrayhill pitcher Andrew Michaud gave up two hits, including a double by Negrini.

Dimond West of Anchorage, Alaska, and West Valley of Idaho also advanced to today's semifinals. The regional winner goes to the Little League World Series at Williamsport, Pa., starting Aug. 20.

Pearl City, which is 3-0 in the Little League Juniors (ages 13 to 14) Western Regional in Forest Grove, Ore., will play Billings, Mont., to complete pool play today.

Pearl City leads one of two pools; the top two teams from each pool advance to the championship round.

Maui's Ribao wins home run contest

The Maui All-Stars were eliminated from the PONY Bronco World Series (ages 11 to 12) in Monterey, Calif., but had a winner in Kealii Ribao.

Ribao hit four home runs in the first round of the Home Run Derby to take first place Saturday. No other batter hit more than one in the first round. Wu Tung-Jung of Taiwan was second and Maui's Patrick Ioane third.

Pacific Grove, Calif., beat Maui, 10-0, on Saturday in the double-elimination event.


Mililani wins again in Pony West Zone

Dustin Antolin and Kyle Gonzaga combined on a four-hitter to lift Mililani to a 3-0 victory over Morgan Hills, Calif., yesterday in the PONY Pony League (ages 13 to 14) West Zone Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.

Antolin struck out six and walked two in four innings and Gonzaga struck out five and walked one in three innings.

Gonzaga also was 2 for 3 and drove in a run.

Mililani is 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament. After a day off today, Mililani will play East Valley, Calif., tomorrow. The title game is Wednesday.

The zone winner advances to the World Series at Washington, Pa., starting Saturday.

Pearl City falls to 1-1 in Little League Seniors

Jaines Segouia pitched a three-hitter to lead El Rio, Calif., to a 4-2 victory over Pearl City in the Little League Senior (ages 15 to 16) Western Regional at San Juan Capistrano, Calif., yesterday.

Chevis Asato-Ganiron went 2 for 2, including a triple, for Pearl City.

Pearl City is 1-1 and plays Roseville, Calif., today in the double-elimination tournament. Rose-ville beat Paradise Valley, Nev., yesterday, 22-0.

The regional winner advances to the World Series at Bangor, Maine, starting Aug. 15.

Holomua finishes 13th at 10-under tourney

Holomua finished 5-2 and in 13th place out of 54 teams at the ASA Junior Olympic Nationals for girls 10 and under at Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday.

Holomua lost to Texas Trouble, 1-0; beat Muscatine Maniacs, 6-2; and lost to the Southern California Cyclones, 7-1, on the final day. Luana Kaululaau, Maycee Moe, Kahea Taniguchi and Pitisi Tualau each had three hits in Holomua's victory over Muscatine.
