Seymour, Rolles win off-road triathlon

Chad Seymour won the men's open division of the Jamba Juice Mountain Man Off-Road Triathlon at Kualoa Ranch yesterday in 1 hour, 23 minutes, 33 seconds.

Seymour, 22, who turned professional earlier this year, finished more than four minutes ahead of second-place Simon Toozoff (1:27:56). Norihiko Katsumi came in third at 1:28:14.

Ingrid Rolles captured the women's open division at 1:37:44.

Tanya Bettis was second (1:39:30) and Candes Gentry finished third (1:48:26).

More than 300 triathletes participated in the event.

The race consisted of a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer mountain bike ride and 6-kilometer run.

It is the only qualifier in Hawai'i for the Xterra World Championships scheduled for Oct. 24 on Maui.


MEETING

UH coach Bolla to speak at QB Club

University of Hawai'i women's basketball coach Jim Bolla is scheduled to speak at today's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Bolla, who previously coached at Nevada Las Vegas, was recently hired to replace the retired Vince Goo.

Also scheduled to speak are John Fink, general manager of KHNL and KFVE; Patrick Leonard, Aloha Stadium public relations manager; and Robert Fitts, who is writing a book about local legendary athlete Wally Yonamine.

The club will also present its Sportspersons of the Month awards to Honolulu Bulls soccer coach Phil Neddo and Kamehameha Schools golfer Mari Chun.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow at noon at the Pagoda Hotel Ballroom.


FESTIVAL

Celebration honoring Kahanamoku set

Duke's Ho'olaule'a celebrates surfing great Duke Kahanamoku, with a festival of water sports events and beachside exhibits along Waikiki Beach, Aug. 20 to 24.

Included in the events are a professional longboard surf meet, waterman sports events, lei draping of Duke's statue and a Sunday brunch.
