Gov. Linda Lingle checks out the recently restored decorative plaster ceiling as 'Iolani Palace docent Fred Cachola, left, begins a tour for Lingle, Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona, far right, and members of the Lingle Cabinet. Between Lingle and Aiona are state comptroller Russ Saito and human services director Lillian Koller.

The most recent phase of restoration work at the palace is nearing completion. The $1.5 million project includes the restoration or repair of wrought-iron work, plaster work and floors, and the installation of hurricane window paneling and security equipment.

The restored columns at left bring fresh detail to the exterior of the palace; the restoration of plaster ceiling molding includes the piece shown above.
