Bahamas leads billfish tournament

Advertiser Staff

Team Wasasa from the Bahamas took over the lead in the 45th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament yesterday in waters off Kailua, Kona.

Philip Le Boutillier caught a 150-pound marlin that was tagged and released to boost Team Wasasa's two-day total to 600 points.

Old South Marlin Club No. 1 and No. 2, from North Carolina, shared second place with 550 points each. Sunshine Coast Game Fishing Club of Australia was fourth.

There were eight catches for the second day in a row, but none of the fish was estimated at 300 pounds or more to warrant bringing it to the Kailua Pier for weighing.

Peter Fithian, tournament founder, described most of the fish so far as active males. The larger females — considered the prized catches — have so far eluded the 18 teams.

"Maybe one of the big girls will show up today," Fithian said.
