Auto-theft suspect arrested

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of auto theft at about 12:30 a.m. today after a police officer spotted a car near the corner of Kamehameha Highway and Kalaloa Street in Halawa being driven without its headlights on.

The officer checked on the license number, learned that the car had been reported stolen, and ordered the car and its two occupants to pull over.

The two people in the car ran away, but the officer was able to find and arrest the driver.

Suspected car thief arrested

A 17-year-old youth was arrested for suspicion of car theft early yesterday morning on Anoi Road in Kane'ohe.

Police responding to a suspicious-circumstances call found two cars parked on the road. One of the cars took off, but the driver of the second car couldn't get it started.

When police approached the second car, they found its steering column ripped open and wires hanging. The officers checked with the car's owner, a 23-year-old man in Kailua, determined the car had been stolen, and arrested the driver.
