Ginger root sales up 50%

Farm sales of Hawai'i ginger root rose 50 percent to $5.4 million in the 2003-04 season, according to the Hawai'i Agricultural Statistics Service.
Farmers harvested 6 million pounds. Farm prices averaged 90 cents per pound, which was second only to the 92.3 cents per pound farmers received in 1981-82.
Scientists may spend $4.8M
A meeting of the American Geophysical Union's scheduled for Saturday through Aug. 20 at the Hawai'i Convention Center is projected to generate $4.8 million in visitor spending and $402,000 in tax revenue for the state.
The scientists' group is expecting 1,500 delegates.
