Education reform topic of meeting

Schools Superintendent Pat Hamamoto and House Education Chairman Roy Takumi, D-36th (Pearl City, Palisades), will discuss education reform at Tuesday's town meeting in Waipahu. The meeting will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Filipino Community Center.

Waipahu complex principals also will attend and will take questions from the public.

400 to graduate at UH on Sunday

About 400 undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Hawai'i will participate in summer commencement ceremonies from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at Stan Sheriff Arena at the UH-Manoa campus.

No tickets are required, and parking will be free for the public event. After the ceremony, friends and family may meet graduates at Les Murakami Stadium.

Although approximately 700 students actually are scheduled to graduate, according to the chancellor's office, many students participated in the larger spring ceremonies or needed to leave before Sunday's event.

Punahou receives $200,000 grant

Punahou School has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the First Hawaiian Foundation to help build the new $62 million Case Middle School, which will open this fall.

The building is under construction, but will open for sixth-graders when the school year begins in two weeks. Seventh- and eighth-graders will move into the building later this year.

The foundation, First Hawaiian Bank's charitable arm, will pay the grant over five years.

ACT unveils helpful Web site

ACT has launched a new Web site for students taking the college admissions exam.

The site, www.actstudent.org, will offer online registration, early scores and score reporting, as well as information about test dates, deadlines and the content of the test. It also will offer free test-preparation questions and college-planning information.

Holy Trinity plans fund-raiser

Holy Trinity School will hold a Krispy Kreme fund-raiser from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the school at 5919 Kalaniana'ole Highway. Cost is $8.50 a dozen. Procees will benefit the school's scholarship fund.
