Moonlight Mele continues

Breathe the sweet city air as the Bishop Museum wraps up its Moonlight Mele on the Lawn Thursday with the harmonious melodies of the Makaha Sons. Louis "Moon" Kauakahi, Jerome "Boogie" Koko and John Koko bring music and laughter to the stage during a night of Hawaiian song and dance. Cultural demonstrations open the night at 6 p.m., with multicultural string instruments by Sonia Fabrigas of Aiwana Artists and Education Coordination. The cultural concert features violin and banjo artists from China, Japan and Hawai'i. The presentation also includes the only stringed instrument made by steel guitarist Greg Sardinha. Museum exhibits also will be open for the public's viewing pleasure. The Makaha Sons then take the stage at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 general, $10 Bank of Hawaii customers and employees and museum members, and $5 children 4-12. 847-3511.

'Sounds of the Ocean'

The Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre revives its outdoor concert series with "The Sounds of the Ocean."
Summer is far from over as the Waikiki Aquarium revives its outdoor concert series, Ke Kani O Ke Kai, on Thursday. The first installment of "The Sounds of the Ocean" features a dazzling showcase with the Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre, directed and choreographed by Cheryl Flaharty. Local restaurants will have food booths on the lawn with scrip for sale at the entrance. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the show starting at 7. Tickets are $18 general and $10 ages 7-12. Home improvement tips from celeb designers

Learn home repair tips from The Learning Channel's celebrity designers at this weekend's Island Home Improvement Expo at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Frank Bielec from "Trading Spaces" and Chayse Dacoda from "While You Were Out" bring their tips and hints to the Blaisdell's Pikake Room for a series of home-improvement and design seminars that take place during the expo. Seminar times are 4:30 and 6 p.m. today, 11 a.m., 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday. Autograph sessions follow each seminar. The expo also features home-improvement vendors, designers, construction and remodeling experts. Expo times are 4-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Japanese dance for charity

Japanese dancing and singing is the focus of a Bando Mitsumasa Charity Concert taking place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The concert, which benefits the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, happens in the McKinley High School auditorium. Japan recording artist Kai Hiromitsu, above, also appears. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door.

Tribute to Tennent

Buz Tennent pays tribute to his father, the late Arthur Tennent, during a concert with pianist Eric Shank tonight. Buz Tennent, a Mainland-trained opera singer and star of Army Community Theatre's "Kiss Me, Kate" last season, will sing some of his father's favorite songs. The concert takes place at Dillingham Hall on the Punahou School campus, where Arthur Tennent taught music and was a member of the class of '35. Tickets are $10 at the door, one hour before the concert, which begins at 7 p.m.

Disco down at Kapono's

Stay alive at Kapono's Saturday night during the funky dance party "Get Down Tonight." Local acts eightOeight, H2O, Shining Star with Traci Toguchi, Planet Jane and Aura reunite with former O'ahu band Six-Five-O to bring back the music of the '60s and '70s to funky town. Six-Five-O, above, formerly known as Soul'd Out, flies in from Las Vegas for the event. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the groovin' starts at 8. Tickets are $20 advance and $25 at the door, for 21 and older. 545-3642.

Elvis is in the building

The King of Rock 'n' Roll lives on. Elvis Presley returns to Hawai'i at 7 p.m. Sunday for a concert in the Blaisdell Arena with a live orchestra and original band members. "Elvis: The Concert" is a multimedia event that blends music with technology as Presley is brought back to life with video footage of some of his most memorable concerts, including the treasured 1973 "Aloha from Hawaii" affair. Experience the King as never before as other groups that backed Presley on tour — The Sweet Inspirations and The Stamps — return to the stage along with musical director Joe Guercio. All aboard for dragon-boat races

The dragons will be awakened from their slumber this weekend for the 9th Annual AT&T Hawaii Dragon Boat Festival. The vibrantly colored boats will race through the swimming channel at Ala Moana Beach Park on both days, with the Cup Race Division 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and the Open Race Division 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday. Entertainment takes place each day on shore from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday's line-up includes TOA, Opihi Pickers, Vaihi, Koa'uka and Kalaeloa. Performers on Sunday include Ellsworth Simeona, Ben Vegas and Maila Gibson, Maunalua and Na Kama. Admission is free. 526-6710.

North Shore fun 'n' games

Head to the North Shore for country air and cultural fun during the North Shore Cultural Festival on Saturday. Held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the Hale'iwa Gym grounds, the merriment includes an Ethnic Food Village, Arts and Crafts Village, Education Village, rummage sale, malasada-eating contest, keiki korral, Waialua Farmers Market Cooperative and family night at the movies.
