FESTIVAL: Aug. 20-22

It's a one-stop-shop for locally made goods as First Hawaiian Bank presents the 2004 Made in Hawaii Festival. With more than 400 exhibitors from O'ahu, Maui, Kaua'i and the Big Island, this year's goodies include home accents, food, flowers, books, apparel, plants, pottery, crafts and produce. Enjoy local entertainment from 'Ale'a, Del Beazley, Kelly Boy DeLima and Kapena, Auntie Genoa Keawe, Weldon Kekauoha, Azure McCall, Maunalua and others. Culinary demonstrations showcase the use of Hawai'i-grown products with chefs from venues including BluWater Grill, Tiki's Grill and Bar, Maui Tacos, Sam Choy's Diamond Head and Jackie's Kitchen. New features this year will be performances by Bruce Shimabukuro's Ukulele Essence and other studios on Saturday and Sunday, and the Rubber Stamp Plantation offers demonstrations at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 and 3:30 p.m. Aug 21. Admission is $2, and children younger than 6 are free. Half-off coupons are available at First Hawaiian Bank locations on O'ahu.

She's Alaskan, she yodels, she's into poetry and she wants to save your soul — or at least wants to know who is. Jewel will be in the Islands for two shows — her first ever here — on Sept. 10 at the Lahaina Civic Center Ampitheater and Sept. 11 at the Both shows start at 7:30 p.m.; tickets will go on sale Aug. 21. Ticket prices had not been announced at press time. O'ahu tickets will be available at the Blaisdell box office.

CONCERT: Aug. 28

Feel the beat as award-winning taiko performers from Japan, North America and Hawai'i come together for a stellar concert of old and new. The International Stars of Taiko in Concert features Japanese drumming with Hiroo Asanuma, Yoshiya Kawasuji, Seiichi Tanaka (left), Hiroyuki Hayashida and Kiyonari Tosha. Female taiko performers Mayumi Kawama, Hiromi Ogawa and Harumi Wakui blend modern, Eastern and Western music. Tickets are $20 lawn and $30 seats.

CONCERT: Aug. 28

The Na Leo Lani Chorus takes to the stage to celebrate music of the '50s and '60s in a concert titled "Barbershop Bandstand." The 2002 Sweet Adelines International Quartet Champion, Fanatix, headlines the show. Also on tap to perform are the Young Women in Harmony 2004 Quartet Champion, Better Than Chocolate, The Young Women in Harmony Hawaii State Chorus, Pacific Trades, The Skylarks, Island Fever and Synergy. Dick Souza hosts. Tickets are $15.

CONCERT: Sept. 10-11

The Grammy-nominated Honolulu Symphony Pops bursts upon its seventh season of the Hawaiian Airlines Pops Series with jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, right. The multi-Grammy award winner's energetic styles and swift techniques make a concert with him an adventure for all. Rocky Brown opens, and Matt Catingub conducts. Tickets are $25, $35, $45, $55 and $70.

STAGE: Sept. 9-25

Army Community Theatre opens its 2004-2005 season with a kick and a twirl with the Tony Award-winning musical "West Side Story." This modern retelling of Shakespeare's classic "Romeo and Juliet" pits the Jets against the Sharks in a musically rich tale of love and gang warfare. The production features Katherine Mills as Maria, Jimi Wheeler as Tony, Tricia Marciel as Anita and Cole Horibe as Bernardo. Stephanie Conching directs. Tickets are $14, $17 general and $8, $10 for children.

STAGE: Sept. 11, 18, 25 and Oct. 2, 9

Come celebrate 50 years with the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, which has produced children's theater entertainment and drama education since 1955. Its 50th anniversary season begins with "The Kona-Town Musicians," an adaptation by Lee Cataluna of the book by Pat Hall. This local-style retelling of a classic Grimm fairy tale brings four animals together to become heroes in their community. Wade Cambern, former member of Hawaiian Style Band, provides the music; Mark Lutwak directs. Tickets are $16 general and $8 children and seniors. Also, all active-duty, retired or military dependents can buy one ticket and get another of equal or lesser value free. Recommended for children 4 and older.

September screenings

Film fans, mark your calendars for the third annual Cinema Paradise Film Festival, Sept. 17-23 at the Varsity theaters. More than 100 screenings are scheduled in categories including "Island Visions," showcasing Hawai'i-made film and video; "Beyond the Reef," about the surf and skateboard cultures; "The Greatest Story Never Told," animated shorts; "Hawaii Circa '70," retrospectives on the issues of that era; and "Next Coast," films for the younger generation. Parties, music and art will also be incorporated in the film festival. Details to come.

Art season in Kamuela

Big Islanders will have a full and varied season of arts and culture, courtesy of Kamuela's Kahilu Theatre, celebrating its 24th year. Included in the season, beginning Sept. 1, are Na Leo Pilimehana, Sept. 24; Mariza, a vocalist who specializes in the Portuguese fado, a musical genre of longing, love and romantic nostalgia, Sept. 29; Bangarra Dance Theatre, Oct. 12; Harlem Gospel Choir, Nov. 4, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Nov. 9, Ladysmith Black Mambazo with Vusi Mahlasela, Jan. 29, and the Ahn Trio, Feb. 3.
