Australian anglers keep lead

Jennelle Young caught a 130-pound blue marlin in the waters off Kailua, Kona, yesterday to help the Game Fishing Club of South Australia remain on top in the 45th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.

The tag-and-release catch of Young's marlin added to Wednesday's 605ý pounder by her husband Brad Bobbermien, raising the team's total to 1,307 points.

The Australians are gunning for a third title in the event conducted from the new Kailua Pier. They won in 1990 and 1996.

The only three-time winner is defending champion Pajaro Valley Gamefish Club of California, which was well behind at yesterday's fishing call.

The tournament will be decided in the final hours of fishing from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

Old South Marlin Club's Team No. 1 slipped into undisputed second place after a 180-pound catch by Randall Ward followed by 175 pounder reeled in by his wife, Susan, about three hours later, bringing the team's total to 1,150 points. Both were caught on 50-pound test line for a maximum of 600 points combined.

The Sunshine Coast Game Fishing Club of Queensland, Australia, is third with 900 points after Gary Barton's 170-pound marlin yesterday.

In the ahi division, Dr. Charles Campbell of the Malibu Marlin Club leads with a 151ý-pound catch.



Youth Baseball

Utah tops Hawai'i in American Legion

Chad Barben pitched a complete game and batted 3 for 4, including a grand-slam to lead Taylorsville, Utah, to a 12-10 victory over 'Aiea yesterday on the first day of the American Legion (18 and under) Western Regional at Greeley, Colo.

Taylorsville got 19 hits off three 'Aiea pitchers, including Barben's grand slam in the sixth inning.

Spencer McCready went 3 for 5 for 'Aiea. Kepa Wong added a double and triple.

'Aiea plays the loser last night's game between Tucson, Ariz., and host Greeley, Colo., today in the double-elimination tournament.



Golf

Asao trails leaders by seven in Arizona event

Hawai'i's Norman-Ganin Asao shot 2-over-par 74 yesterday and is tied for 19th going into the final round of the Gateway Tour's 10th event, at Desert Highland Legend Trails Golf Course in Arizona.

Asao's 210 total is seven shots off the lead.



Dragon boats

Annual festival set for this weekend

The 9th Annual AT&T Hawai'i Dragon Boat Festival will be held tomorrow and Sunday at Ala Moana Beach Park.

A lion dance blessing kicks off the festivities tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. Dragon boat races will follow and run until 4 p.m.

Sunday's races begin at 8 a.m.



Olympics Beach Volleyball

Ex-Rainbow Berger gets new partner

Former University of Hawai'i Rainbow Nikolas Berger lost his beach volleyball partner when Clemens Doppler had to withdraw on Wednesday.

Doppler injured his left knee three weeks ago in France. Berger will now represent Austria with Florian Gosch.
