Author to discuss her new book

Maria Rosa Menocal will discuss her book, "Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews, and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain," at 7:30 tonight at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theatre.

Literary historian Menocal is a professor at Yale University. "Ornament" is one of five books she has written.

The lecture is free.

Buddhist center offers workshop

The Hawai'i Association of International Buddhists' Intercultural and Intergenerational Young Adult Program will hold a free workshop, "Dharma and Creative Drama," 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 21 at the Buddhist Study Center, 1436 University Ave.

The workshop explores what the Buddha taught through creative drama, using active participation in games, music and improvisational drama.

Wear comfortable clothes suitable for movement. The facilitator, Parichat Jungwiwattanaporn, was born in Thailand and is a theater artist.

14-week course for people 55 and up

Central Union Church, 1660 S. Beretania, will host an "Illuminated Life" workshop for those age 55 and older in September.

Facilitator Liz Bailey, faculty member at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, leads the 14-week course.

Registration fee: $20; workbook is $15.
