Australian anglers win Billfish event

The Game Fishing Club of South Australia yesterday withstood a late surge by a Japan team to win its third Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off Kailua, Kona.
The Australians used the tournament's biggest marlin on Wednesday and a Thursday tag-andirelease catch to claim the 45th event.
The True Blue Fishing Club of Japan landed two tag-and-release blue marlin to pull within 57 points of the leaders before action closed.
South Australia received 100 extra points for the largest fish of the tournament a 605à-pound catch by Brad Bobbermien to finish at 1,407 points. His wife, Jennelle Young, had a 130-pound tag-and-release marline, which provided the pivotal points.
The championship was the third for captain John Johnston who also took titles in 1990 and 1996. That matched Pajaro Valley Gamefish Club of California, which became the first three-time winner in 2003.
True Blue's Kichiro Nagashiki reeled in two catches, one on 50-pound test and the second on 80-point, to score 600 points and propel the Japan team to 1,250 points. The Fukuyama angler's released catches were estimated at 100 and 140 pounds.
Sunshine Coast Game Fishing Club of Queensland, Australia, finished third with 1,200 points. Team Wasasa of the Bahamas and the Old South Marlin Club Number 1 each scored 1,150 to tie for fourth. Old South Number 2 finished sixth with 1,100.
The top skipper was rookie Boyd DeCoito with 1,857 on the Foxy Lady. The ahi division was claimed by Dr. Charles Campbell of the Malibu Marlin Club with a 151à-pound catch.
Hawai'i beats Arizona in American Legion
Blake Lamug pitched a six-hitter and 'Aiea scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning to eliminate Tucson, Ariz., 6-4, yesterday at the American Legion (18 and under) Western Regional at Greeley, Colo.
'Aiea is 1-1 in the double-elimination tournament and plays Las Vegas today.
'Aiea scored two runs on two wild pitches in the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead.
Lamug got out of a ninth-inning jam after loading the bases with no outs, allowing just one run. He finished with nine strikeout and no walks.
'Aiea's Taylor Watanabe had three hits and Dyland Libadisos and Kepa Wong each had two hits and two RBIs.
Asao finishes 30th; McLachlin eight back
Former Hawai'i high school champion Norman-Ganin Asao birdied four of the last eight holes to finish 30th and win $1,189 yesterday on the Grey Goose/Gateway Tour.
The tour's 10th event was played at Desert Highlands Legend Trail Golf Club in Arizona.
After firing a 6-under 65 in the opening round, Asao closed with a 72 to finish at 282. John Douma got the $28,000 first prize at 68-271.
Parker McLachlin, another former high school champion, fired a bogey-free 68 yesterday on the NGA Hooters Tour. He is at 5-under 139 halfway through the Buffalo Run Classic, at Peoria Ridge Golf Club in Miami, Okla.
Former U. S. Amateur champion Bubba Dickerson leads the tournament at 131 after shooting a course-record 64 Thursday.
