Tahiti paddlers win six races

Tahiti won six gold medals in the double-hull canoe races yesterday at the International Va'a Federation (IVF) World Sprints at Hilo Bay.

Tahiti took first place in the open men's and open women's races, and also swept the four junior division races.

Hawai'i teams won three gold medals. Maui's Hawaiian Canoe Club won the men's senior masters race for paddlers 50 and older; Team Hawai'i won the men's masters race for paddlers 40 and older, and Team Hawai'i won the women's masters race for paddlers 35 and older.

The double-hull races are for 12-person teams. All the double-hull races were 500 meters.

Finals in the one-person canoe and six-person canoe divisions are scheduled to run today. More than 1,800 paddlers from around the world are participating in the week-long event that concludes today.



GOLF

Team Hawai'i 10th in Eddie Hogan Cup

Team Hawai'i shot 229 in the 36th Eddie Hogan Cup yesterday and is in 10th going into today's final round at Portland, Ore.

Kellen Watabu (75), Travis Toyama (77) and Chad Nonaka (77) made up Team Hawai'i, which is 12 strokes behind leader Southern California.

Daniel Reid of Team Utah has the individual lead after shooting 3-under 69.

McLachlin tumbles to 46th in pro event

Punahou graduate Parker McLachlin shot a 74 yesterday to fall into a tie for 46th going into the final round of the NGS/Hooters Pro Tour event at Peoria Ridge Golf Course in Miami, Okla.

McLachlin's 54-hole total is 3-under 213. He trails leaders Will Mackenzie (65) and Bubba Dickerson (71) by 11.



TRACK

UH's Buchanan earns scholastic honors

University of Hawai'i women's track and field athlete Dana Buchanan has been honored as an Academic All-American by the U.S. Track Coaches Association.

Buchanan, a freshman from Beachburg, Ontario, participated in the NCAA West Regional Championships last spring. She set school records in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs.

Buchanan maintained a 3.30 grade point average and was also named to the Academic All-Western Athletic Conference team and a UH Scholar-Athlete.



MEETING

Acting UH president to speak at QB Club

David McClain, acting president of the University of Hawai'i, will speak at tomorrow's weekly meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Also scheduled to speak are TV basketball analyst Artie Wilson and Honolulu Bulls soccer coach Phil Neddo.

The public is invited to the lunch at the Pagoda Ballroom, which starts at 11:30 a.m.. The program follows at noon.
