Boy hit by truck on highway dies

A 13-year-old boy who was hit by a truck while crossing Farrington Highway near Kahe Point Beach Park at about 7:40 p.m. yesterday died at about 2 a.m. today at The Queen's Medical Center.

The traffic death toll on Oahu now stands at 43 for the year compared to 52 for the same period last year.

In another accident earlier in the day, two 11-year-olds were seriously injured when the all-terrain vehicle they were riding collided with a motorcycle on a dirt road near Dillingham Air Field. The children and the teenage driver of the motorcycle were taken by helicopter to Queens.

Four arrested in Waipahu assault

Four men in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault after an incident at about 10:45 last night on Kahuanui Street in Waipahu.

A man, 28, and woman, 21, told police they were sitting in their car when one of the men approached their car and one of them began hitting it with a pipe. The man got out of the car to confront the man with the pipe when the three other men got involved.

The woman who was in the car was struck when she got out to try to stop the attack. Arriving police officers were able to catch and arrest the four men, ages 22, 26, 20 and 29.

Man, 20, facing car-theft charges

A 20-year-old man is facing car-theft charges after being caught by a police officer at about 7:30 p.m. yesterday in Waipahu.

The officer was on patrol in a residential area when he saw a car speed by. He checked the car's license plate and learned it had been reported stolen.

The officer followed the car to a dead-end street, saw the driver get out and run, but found him hiding in a nearby yard.

Taxi driver reports robbery

A taxi driver told police he was robbed last night after taking four men from Waikiki to Kalihi.

The driver, 50, said he picked the men up at the Jack-in-the Box restaurant and was instructed to take them to Richard Lane. When they arrived at their destination, a passenger in the front seat pulled a knife and demand money while one of the backseat passengers choked him, the driver said.

Woman assaulted in Hawai'i Kai

A 25-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted by a man who approached her at about 3:30 p.m. yesterday at a Hawai'i Kai beach and offered to give her snorkeling lessons.

The woman said the man, in his early 40s, assaulted her after the two entered the water.
