Coral reefs provide habitat for fish and marine life, but reefs are as fragile as they are cool to explore. They protect our shorelines from erosion, so Navy Region Hawaii reminds us:
Don't walk on coral. Coral polyps, tiny creatures responsible for building reefs, can be crushed under your weight.
Don't move reef- and tidepool-creatures. Many can't survive being transplanted.
Always return ocean rocks to their original positions. The undersides represent a special habitat.
Slow up, calm down, enjoy the day
Richard Mahler, author of "Stillness: Daily Gifts of Solitude," reminds us to live it up by slowing down. In "Enough!," published by the Center for a New American Dream, he suggests these simple, satisfying activities:
Be a tourist in your own town.
Learn a new game.
Be of service and volunteer.
Cook something you've never cooked before.
