Blue Angels show slated for October

If the Marines and Navy have anything to say about it, Hawai'i residents won't be waking up to another boring but beautiful second weekend in October.
• More information on the air show is available at www.bluesonthebay.org. • More information on the Blue Angels is available at www.blueangels.navy.mil. On Oct. 9 and 10, the Blue Angels, the Navy's popular precision flying team, will perform their high-speed acrobatics at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i in Kane'ohe.
The group will be the feature attraction in the first air show at K-Bay in more than two decades.
"It's just an awesome show to see for the military as well as the civilian community," said Maj. Patricia Johnson, a base spokeswoman. "The military doesn't get to see them often, either."
The show is called Kane'ohe Bay Marine Corps Navy Air Show: Blues on the Bay.
Other attractions will include a demonstration of Kane'ohe Marines and sailors storming the runway in a combat simulation.
Patty Wagstaff, an acrobatic flier who was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, will be among the flying performers, and military and civilian aviation static displays will also be a part of the show.
Staff Sgt. Jeff Middleton of the Marines' public affairs office said the Marines are looking forward to opening their gates to the public. Admission will be free, and the show is tentatively scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. each day.
The Blue Angels, a flight demonstration team inspired by Adm. Chester Nimitz, first performed in 1946. The team is based in Pensacola, Fla., and now performs its high-speed acrobatics in six F/A-18 Hornets.
The group last visited Hawai'i in 1995, when they performed at Barbers Point during V-J Day celebrations.
They have much more exciting plans for us.
