Hawai'i ties

• Marie-Luc Arpin, a former University of Hawai'i player, scored a goal in Canada's 8-6 loss to Russia in women's water polo yesterday.

• Tania (Brunton) Tupu, another UH alum, had two rebounds and didn't score in New Zealand's 81-73 women's basketball victory over Korea yesterday at Hellinko Indoor Arena. Tupu played 17 minutes.

• Jason McCartney, who was born in Honolulu and raised in Coralville, Iowa, is a member of the U.S. road cycling team. McCartney failed to finish in the 139.4-mile road race through downtown Athens on Saturday. Officials pulled him off the course after 10 laps. McCartney, 30, later told Gannett News Service heat was a factor.

• U.S. men's water polo player Jesse Smith, 21, was born in Kailua, but moved to Coronado, Calif., when he was 5. Smith, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior at Pepperdine, scored two goals in the United States' 7-6 win over Croatia on Sunday. Honolulu's Brandon Brooks is the starting goal keeper for the U.S. team.

• Lopaka Purdy, 21, of Waimanalo, a student at Willamette University (Ore.), is volunteering as a press agency assistant for the Associated Press. Purdy is a 2001 Kalaheo High grad.
