Suspect arrested in attack on police

By Curtis Lum
Advertiser Staff Writer

A Honolulu police officer fired four shots at a fleeing vehicle yesterday afternoon on the North Shore after the driver tried to run over the officer, police said.

A 21-year-old Honolulu man was arrested in connection with the incident. He was booked at the Kahuku police substation on suspicion of attempted murder and auto theft.

No one was hurt, police said.

Police said that shortly after 1 p.m., officers spotted a stolen car near Ke Iki beach, where police said there have been a rash of car break-ins. Police followed the vehicle to the driveway of Turtle Bay Resort, where they tried to stop the motorist.

One officer got out of his vehicle and the motorist drove toward the officer, police said. The officer jumped out of the way and then fired four shots, striking the silver sedan at least twice.

The man continued to drive south on Kamehameha Highway. At about 3 p.m., witnesses told police that a man was seen running from a car to a beach house in Malaekahana.

Police tracked down the man, and he was arrested.

The theft and shooting remain under investigation, police said.
