Top surfers compete in Waikiki

The Converse Hawaiian Open one of the richest longboard surfing contests in the world is scheduled to start today at Kuhio Beach, Waikiki.
Many of the world's best professional longboard surfers are expected to compete in the three-day contest, including world champion Joel Tudor of California, and top Hawai'i surfers Kekoa Uemura and Bonga Perkins.
The contest will offer a $26,000 prize purse, the most for a surfing contest on O'ahu's South Shore in 15 years.
The men's winner and women's winner will each get $10,000. Top female entries from Hawai'i include Desiree DeSoto and Joy Magelssen.
Preliminary heats will run today and tomorrow, with the finals scheduled for Saturday.

Electrician's Hawai'i, Mango Moon in final
Electricians Hawai'i and Mango Moon advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Summer League with victories last night at Manoa Recreation Center gym.
The title game will be held Saturday, starting at 7 p.m. at the Manoa gym.
University of Hawai'i recruit Matt Gibson scored 38 points and Jamar Miller added 15 as Electricians Hawai'i defeated Honolulu Ford, 103-102, last night.
Jason Carter scored 29 points and Geremy Robinson 28 for Honolulu Ford.
Justice Sueing scored 39 points and Tess Whitlock 30 to lead Mango Moon to a 103-102 victory over Central Medical Clinic.
Alvin Stephenson scored 29 points and Nick Spajic 25 for Central Medical Clinic.
Gonzaga joins field for 2005 Maui Invitational
Gonzaga has joined the eight-team field for the 2005 EA Sports Maui Invitational at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Gonzaga fills a void left by DePaul, which requested a move from 2005 to a later Maui date because it will be joining the newly configured Big East Conference beginning with the 2005-06 season, according to tournament organizers.
Besides host Chaminade and Gonzaga, the 2005 tournament includes six former national champions Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Kansas, Maryland and Michigan State.
The 2004 EA Sports Maui Invitational, scheduled for Nov. 22 to 24, features BYU, Iowa, Louisville, North Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas and Chaminade.

Three Hawai'i players in zone championship
Hawai'i's trio of high performance juniors survived the final cut and is representing the USA at the NORCECA zone championship in Mexico City.
Iolani setter Kawika Shoji is the youth national team's captain. Two of his hitting options are 2004 Kamehameha graduate Adam Tuifagu and Punahou sophomore Spencer McLachlin. University of Hawai'i assistant Tino Reyes is part of the coaching staff.
Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico and Guatemala are also in the tournament, which runs through Sunday.
The U.S. Youth National Team is open to boys born in 1986 and '87. Players participated in USA Volleyball's High Performance tryouts earlier this year. The top players were named to the training team, which has been practicing in Lake Placid, N.Y. The final 12 were chosen for NORCECA, where they are playing for a slot in the 2005 World Championships.
