Car crash near Volcano kills 2

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police believe speeding and drinking played a part in a two-car collision at about 5:30 p.m. yesterday near Volcano that left two people dead and two others critically injured.

Police said Stanley Keliiholokai was traveling south in a white Mitsubishi sedan on Highway 11 near Nahelenani Street when he attempted to pass several vehicles in a no-passing zone.

They said Keliiholokai could not complete the pass in time and that his car smashed head-on into a Chevrolet sedan being driven by Rogelio Manahan of New York.

Clinton Kaleiwahea, 31, a front-seat passenger in Keliiholokai's car was killed in the crash as was a woman front-seat passenger in Manahan's car whose name has not been released by police.

Keliiholokai and Manahan were in critical condition at Hilo Medical Center this morning, police said.

The deaths yesterday brought the Big Island traffic death toll for the year to 27 compared with 16 for the same period last year.
