Feel the beat as award-winning taiko performers from Japan, North America and Hawai'i come together for a stellar concert of old and new. The International Stars of Taiko in Concert features Japanese drumming with Hiroo Asanuma, Yoshiya Kawasuji, Seiichi Tanaka, Hiroyuki Hayashida and Kiyonari Tosha. Amanojaku — female taiko performers Mayumi Kawana, Hiromi Ogawa and Harumi Wakui — blend modern, Eastern and Western music. Tickets are $20 lawn and $30 seats.

The Na Leo Lani Chorus takes to the stage to celebrate music of the '50s and '60s in a concert titled "Barbershop Bandstand." The 2002 Sweet Adelines International Quartet Champion, Fanatix, headlines the show. Also on tap to perform are the Young Women in Harmony 2004 Quartet Champion, Better Than Chocolate, The Young Women in Harmony Hawaii State Chorus, Pacific Trades, The Skylarks, Island Fever and Synergy. Come out and play when the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources hosts a day of fun with the grand opening of the Children's Garden, left, at the Urban Garden Center. Feel like a kid again with a hedge maze, hands-on crafts, fish pond, entertainment, educational activities and a mini-produce and plant sale. Explore the eight theme gardens, which include the Pizza Garden, Animal Garden, House Garden, Hawaiian Alphabet Tree Garden and Butterfly Garden. Admission is free.

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance presents the musical comedy-drama "Philemon" as the opening production of its Prime Time series. Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, creators of "The Fantasticks," wrote this engaging and inspiring play set in ancient Rome. Asian Theatre MFA candidate Allyson Paris directs; at right are Alvin Chan as Cockian and Lei Sadakari as Kiki. A post-show discussion with the director and cast follows the Sept. 3 performance. Tickets are $10 general, $8 seniors, military, UH faculty/staff and non-UHM students and $3 UHM students.

Manoa Valley Theatre launches its 2004-2005 season with the musical revue "My Way." Frank Sinatra's world comes alive in this glowing tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes. The cabaret-style show is filled with signature Sinatra tunes peppered throughout reflections of moments in his life. Tickets are $30, with a $5 discount for military and seniors. Those 25 and younger are $15.

The Grammy-nominated Honolulu Symphony Pops bursts upon its seventh season of the Hawaiian Airlines Pops Series with jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, left. The multi-Grammy award winner's energetic styles and swift techniques make a concert with him an adventure for all. Rocky Brown opens, and Matt Catingub conducts. "Anything Goes" for Diamond Head Theatre, which jumps right into its 90th anniversary and 2004-2005 season with the popular Cole Porter musical. This romantic comedy full of love affairs and identity mix-ups on a cruise liner is enjoying a revival in London and has won multiple Tony Awards. Classic favorites include "I Get a Kick Out of You," " Bon Voyage" and "It's De-Lovely." John Rampage directs and choreographs. Tickets are $12-$42.

Jewel cancels gigs on Maui and O'ahu

You can cross Jewel off your calendar. The Alaskan songbird who had planned a gig on Maui and at the Waikiki Shell next month had to cancel because of a conflicting personal commitment.

Blue Angels to soar

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird, it's a plane! No, it's several planes, known as the precision flying team Blue Angels, heading for our skies Oct. 9-10 at the Marine Corps Base Hawai'i in Kane'ohe. The Navy team was formed in 1946 and have since performed for more than 380 million viewers. Their appearance is part of a "Blues on the Bay" event on the base, open to the public, scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. each day. Admission is free. More info will be posted at www.bluesonthebay.org.

The Force will be with us

On the DVD front, sci-fi fans can look forward to the four-disc "Star Wars Trilogy" set, scheduled to hit the shelves Sept. 21. It retails at $70 (but there are other deals out there, including at amazon.com, where the advance-order price is $41.99).
