Awards given at Bishop dinner
Two outstanding community members were honored recently at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Awards Dinner, an annual fund-raiser.
Bert A. Kobayashi received the Charles Reed Bishop Medal, presented to recipients who exemplify the spirit and purpose of the Bishop Museum's founder.
J.W.A. "Doc" Buyers received the Robert J. Pfeiffer Medal, which honors those dedicated to the advancement and perpetuation of Hawai'i's rich maritime heritage.
The awards dinner continues to celebrate community members who have made lifelong commitments to Hawai'i and its people.
After 14 years of teaching in every elementary grade level in California's Los Nietos School District, Pat Gachett has been named the district's 2003-04 Teacher of the Year.
The 1986 Iolani School graduate, daughter of Bob and Amy Hee of Kane'ohe, received the good news while vacationing in the Islands with her husband, Derrick, a former USC football player, and their two children, Kiana, 8, and Tyler, 6.
Gachett teaches a kindergarten class at Nelson Elementary School in West Whittier, Calif. Principal Alberto Hananel said her classroom is "probably one of the neatest places to go in and watch, because a lot of learning takes place. She has good rapport with her students and parents."
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., has chosen Jennifer Kemp-Smith, an English teacher at Sacred Hearts Academy, as one of its 11 museum teacher fellows for 2004. She participated in a five-day institute at the museum.
The Museum Teacher Fellowship Program works to develop a corps of skilled secondary school teachers who will serve as leaders in Holocaust education locally and nationally.
