The Kailua High School football team scored 27 unanswered points last night to rally past visiting Kapolei, 27-20, in the non-league season opener for both teams.

It was the coaching debut for Kailua's Gary Rosolowich, who took over for Darren Johnson after eight seasons. The Surfriders had reached the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship game the past three seasons.

Kapolei, in just its third season at the varsity level, will be competing in the OIA's Red (top tier) Conference for the first time.

The Hurricanes looked more than ready for the challenge, jumping out to a 20-0 lead in the game's first 14 minutes as quarterback Jon Medeiros ran for two touchdowns and passed for another. Kailua finally answered with nine seconds remaining in the half, when Kelroy Kohatsu connected with Shaun Forges on an 11-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal.

The Surfriders' defense stepped up in the second half, pitching a shutout.

Kekoa Sua's 36-yard touchdown run closed the gap to 20-13 with 27 seconds left in the third quarter, then Kailua took the lead with 7:05 remaining in the game after Kohatsu's 1-yard quarterback sneak and two-point conversion pass to Forges.

Damien Torres scored on a 33-yard touchdown run with 1:19 left to put the Surfriders up 27-0, and the Hurricanes lost the ball on downs after the ensuing kickoff.
