Community Editorial Board
In a welcome break for Advertiser editorial board members, this summer's Community Board was composed of eight O'ahu high school students.
And they critiqued the paper, questioning the positioning of entertainment (e.g., Jasmine Trias) stories on the front page, and asking for more coverage of community sports leagues.
They asked how front-page stories are chosen and why "Sherman's Lagoon" isn't on The Advertiser's comics page.
The board members:
• Andrew Abordonado, who will be a senior at Roosevelt High School, is interested in Hawai'i politics and is active in speech, debate and student politics. • Ashley Abordonado will be a Roosevelt sophomore. An aspiring actress, she's also into graphic arts and Web design. • Jason Ishikawa will be a Punahou senior. He's in the political activists' club, is a debater and has written feature stories for the school newspaper. • Marisa Kirio will be a senior at iolani School. This summer she's volunteering at a nonprofit organization that helps women make the transition from prison to the community. • David Kurashige, who is a product of homeschooling, will be a senior. He's in the Homeschool National Honor Society. • Catherine Ly will be a senior at La Pietra. She'll be co-editor of the yearbook and treasurer for her class. She also paddles and volunteers at The Queen's Medical Center. • John David Nako will be a freshman at Punahou, transferring from a public-school background. He's been on the math team, and plays trumpet and golf. • Kaylee Noborikawa will be a senior at Kaiser High School. She's sports editor for the school newspaper and plays volleyball.
Free-ranging discussions tackled subjects such as school testing and the No Child Left Behind law, behind-the-wheel driving attitudes, the draft, the shortage of UH dorm space, the reasons so few young people vote, and the reasons "yo-yo" terror alerts are making the public apathetic.
