WASHINGTON, Pa. — Mililani managed to fight through two suspended games and a trip into the loser's bracket to make it to the Pony World Series final.

O'ahu third baseman Scott Sakaida threw to first base during the Cal Ripken World Series yesterday.

What Mililani couldn't get through was the East Cobb (Ga.) machine and its key cog, Jake Davies.

Davies pitched a one-hitter as East Cobb beat Mililani, 3-1, yesterday in the championship game of the Pony (ages 13 and 14) World Series at Lew Hays Pony Field.

Davies also hit an RBI double in the first and a solo homer in the third. He struck out five and walked four, and didn't allow a hit through the first four innings.

"We tried," said Mililani manager Terry Derby Jr., whose team reached the title game earlier in the day by defeating Caguas, Puerto Rico, 9-2, in a game that was suspended by rain Friday. "He pitched a (heck) of a game. The better team won today."

Davies, who allowed one earned run in 13 innings in the series, gave up a single to Dustin Antolin to lead off the fifth.

"Jake has been unbelievable," East Cobb manager Danny Pralgo said. "His pitch count was low and he did a tremendous job staying ahead of the hitters."

He also did the job at the plate. With two outs in the first, Marcus Smith singled and Davies followed with a double to the left-center field gap off Mililani starter Waylen Sing Chow to score Smith.

Then, with two outs in the third, Davies hit a solo home run to left-center field.

Mililani scored its only run without a hit in the bottom of the third. Jared Nagai walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Travis Derby sacrificed Nagai to third, Jay Yoshizawa bunted Nagai home to cut East Cobb's lead to 2-1.

East Cobb added an insurance run in the sixth when Jarrett Didrick singled home Davies.

Mililani reached the championship game with its 9-2 win over Caguas in the completion of their suspended game from Friday.

Mililani, which led 4-2 in the top of the third at the time of suspension, quickly established control of the play-in game with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Kyle Gonzaga, who hit a home run in the first inning Friday, doubled in a run off Caguas starter Richard Cruz, followed by bunt RBI singles by Antolin and Nagai off Caguas reliever Christopher Fonseca.

Nagai had four singles off four different Caguas pitchers.

Gonzaga, Mililani's pitcher, did not allow a run after play resumed. He gave up two runs on nine hits in the complete game.

Though Mililani finished one win short of its goal, the team still had a week it won't soon forget.

"It's been tremendous," Derby Jr. said. "It was a great opportunity for us and the kids. Even though we lost, we still have a lot of memories. It's not all about winning or losing. The kids got a great experience."
