• Plans to make Kaka'ako a place where people "live, work and play" will be discussed by a panel sponsored by the HAWAII VENTURE CAPITAL ASSOCIATION.

Panelists will include Dan Dinell, executive director, Hawai'i Community Development Authority, the state agency responsible for Kaka'ako redevelopment; Jeff Dinsmore, general manager of Victoria Ward and General Growth Properties, owner of more than 60 acres of Kaka'ako land, who just announced plans for a $100 million makeover of nearby Ward Center area shops; Bob Oda, project manager, Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate, which is funding a major road map effort to direct KSBE's vision for its 50-plus acres of Kaka'ako; and David Watumull, president and chief executive officer of Hawaii Biotech Inc.

• A behind-the-scenes look at Aloha Shoyu's successful branding and positioning of its product for Mainland markets will be part of a business education seminar, "MAKING OF THE BRAND: GIVING YOUR PRODUCT STAR POWER." The seminar is sponsored by the Hawaii Food Manufacturers Association and state Department of Agriculture.

Luncheon speaker will be Frank Haas, director of tourism marketing for the state Tourism Authority, who will discuss "Rebranding Hawai'i — How HTA is Creating Fresh Appeal for a Mature Product."

• The Small Business Administration's Community Express Loan program, developed to provide financial and technical or management assistance to underserved segments of the small-business community — minorities, women, veterans and businesses in underserved communities — will be the focus of a free, one-day loan application workshop.

• The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU offers free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs.

• "Hawai'i's Tech Future: Should We Be Hanging Around For It?" will be the question posed Wednesday to the local chapter of the WORLD FUTURE SOCIETY, a group that provides a forum to discuss changes likely to take place over the next 15 to 20 years and the options they present.
