Arpin lifts Canadians to win in water polo

ATHENS, Greece Former University of Hawai'i All-American Marie-Luc Arpin scored two goals to help Canada beat Kazakhstan, 10-4, yesterday and capture seventh place in the Olympic women's water polo competition.
Susan Gardiner, Cora Campbell and Johanne Begin also scored two goals for Canada, which led 6-1 at halftime.
Svetlana Koroleva scored all four goals for Kazakhstan. At the last Olympics, Canada defeated Kazakhstan to take fifth in a six-team tournament.
Czech Republic beats New Zealand, 74-57
Former University of Hawai'i All-Western Athletic Conference guard Tania (Brunton) Tupu scored five points and had a rebound for New Zealand.
Tupu also played on the Kiwi team that won just one game at its first Olympics in Sydney, finishing 11th. New Zealand finished pool play 2-3 here and advances to a Wednesday quarterfinal against unbeaten Australia.
Gina Farmer led New Zealand with 19 points and Angela Marino added 18.

It was a game Canada probably should not have been part of, considering it beat pool-play winner USA. But the top four teams were so tight the Canadians missed out on the medal round.

Czech Republic captain Hana Machova scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds and six steals to lead her team to a 74-57 victory over New Zealand.
