A day after a 25-3 victory, O'ahu got a complete-game shutout to remain undefeated at the Babe Ruth Baseball (14-year-olds) World Series in Wilson County, N.C., yesterday.

Harrison Ishida Jr. pitched a four-hitter, striking out four, in a 2-0 victory over Jefferson Parish, La.

Paul Snieder, who hit a grand slam on Saturday, hit a solo shot in the first inning.

In the fourth inning, Snieder scored on an infield single by Ishida.

O'ahu faces North Kitsap, Wash., today. The opening round robin continues through Wednesday.

BOXING

Wai'anae boxers shine in Kansas City bouts

Jonathen Benitez of Wai'anae dominated every round as he defeated Texas' Michael Trejo at the 2004 Ringside Championships in Kansas City, Mo., this past week.

Other gold medal winners were Tony Perreira and Jonathen Dinong, both from Wai'anae.

Taking silver were Hawai'i boxers Colleen Loo and Brooks Jumawan.

Defending champions Boston Salmon (Wai'anae) and Kawika Tangjian (Makakilo) lost to eventual gold medalists in the semifinals.

VOLLEYBALL

HPU women voted preseason favorite

Pacific West Conference coaches selected the Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball team as the favorite to capture the 2004 conference crown.

In voting by the league's six head coaches, the Sea Warriors received 48 of a possible 50 points.

HPU was ranked No. 12 in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll.

The Sea Warriors will return all-conference players Flavia Brakling, Nadica Karleusa and Vera Oliveira. Brakling and Oliveira were first-team selections and Karleusa was named to the second team.

Hawai'i Pacific, which advanced to the West Region finals last year, narrowly edged BYU-Hawai'i for the top spot in the preseason poll. The Seasiders, ranked No. 18 nationally by the AVCA, received 44 points to finish second.

Western New Mexico was picked third with 32 points followed by Chaminade (28 points), Hawai'i-Hilo (16) and Montana State-Billings.

The 2004 volleyball season will kick off during the final weekend of this month.
