Waikiki shooting wounds man, 28

A 28-year-old man was shot in the shoulder during an incident at about 10:45 last night at Kaiolu Street and Ala Wai Boulevard in Waikiki.

Witnesses heard gunshots and called police. Officers found the wounded victim, who was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was in guarded condition today.

The gunman was described as thin and wearing dark clothing. He drove away in a dark, late-model car.

4 boys suspects in Makiki attack

Police captured four of five boys suspected of robbing a 38-year-old man in Makiki last night.

The man told police he was walking down the street when the five boys started hitting and kicking him, demanding his property.

The man broke free, fled and waved down a police officer who was driving past. Police were able to catch three 13-year-olds and one 14-year-old.

The victim identified the four boys, who were arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

Arrest leads to auto-theft charge

A 39-year-old man was arrested about 9:30 a.m. yesterday at Ala Moana Beach Park on suspicion of auto theft.

A police officer noticed a parked car had no front license plate and that all of its windows were covered. He ran a check on the back license plate and found it did not match the car.

He then checked the car's vehicle identification number and found it was on a list of stolen vehicles. The arrest followed.

Man pulled from water dies

A 72-year-old man died yesterday after he was pulled unconscious from waters off Waikiki.

Police said the man, who had an Ala Moana Boulevard address, went swimming off the Hilton Hawaiian Village at about 9:30 a.m. An hour later, he was found unconscious and pulled from the ocean.

The man was pronounced dead at a hospital. An autopsy was pending.

Car set on fire; carjack claimed

Police are looking into a report by a 19-year-old man who said he was the victim of a carjacking at about 9:20 last night in Kailua.

The man told police he was sitting in his car with a friend when a stranger in his 40s came out of nowhere, pointed a gun at him and ordered the two people out of the car.

The gunman drove off in the car, which was later found on fire a few miles away.

Seat-belt citation leads to an arrest

A 27-year-old man picked the wrong time and place to drive without wearing a seat belt yesterday.

A Wahiawa police officer spotted the man sitting in a black Ford Mustang at about 11:50 a.m. at California Avenue and Cane Street, about two blocks from the Wahiawa police station.

As the officer was preparing to write the man a ticket for failing to use the seat belt, a check of the car's identification number number showed it had been reported stolen.

The officer then learned that the license plate on the rear of the Mustang belonged to another car whose owner had reported the license plate stolen.

A plastic bag containing what appeared to be crystal methamphetamine was found on the car's front seat and a glass pipe was found in the car's center console.

A search of the car turned up yet another license plate that had been stolen, police said.

Charges pending against the Mustang driver include car theft, fraudulent use of license plates, narcotics possession, possession of narcotics paraphernalia and three counts of detaining stolen property.
