IN THE COURTS

Kahumoku charge won't be reinstated

The city Prosecutor's Office yesterday said it will not reinstate the misdemeanor assault charge against former University of Hawai'i volleyball star Lily Kahumoku.

Honolulu District Judge Barbara Richardson on Aug. 12 dismissed the charge after Kahumoku's former boyfriend, José José Delgado, the alleged victim, did not show up for the non-jury trial. But the judge gave city prosecutors 10 days to refile the charge.

The city Prosecutor's Office yesterday said it reviewed the case and Delgado clearly told the office through his lawyer that he is not willing to cooperate with the prosecution.

Kahumoku, 23, was accused of assaulting Delgado at an apartment on Ala Moana the early morning of April 9.

David Eldredge will coach Southern Utah

After several years of searching for a Division I baseball coaching job, Punahou School graduate David Eldredge landed one at Southern Utah, the Mid-Continent Conference school announced yesterday.

Eldredge, 43, succeeds Kurt Palmer, who took an assistant coaching job at Wright State.

"After two years of applying at different places, we found just how tough it is," Eldredge said. "It gets tough for Hawai'i guys out here because so many of our ties are back home. But we kept trying for an opportunity here."

Eldredge, a 1979 Punahou graduate, was head coach for Hawai'i Pacific University from 1990 to 1995, leading the Sea Warriors to five NAIA district championships. Among the players he coached was Benny Agbayani, who is completing his first season with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan. Eldredge also had assistant coaching stints with his college alma mater, Brigham Young, and at Loyola Marymount.

He said he will be recruiting players from Hawai'i for his program.

"I've always been a believer that Hawai'i boys can play," he said.
