ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Please do not peeve the anacondas

Advertiser Staff

"Anacondas" hits the movie theaters Friday, and even though wild snakes are almost nonexistent in Hawai'i, thoughts of the slithering reptiles can be captivating.

Some anaconda facts from www.extremescience.com:

  • Anacondas live in northern South America. They thrive in swamps, sluggish streams and rain forests.
  • Anacondas, on average, are 20 feet long, weigh 330 pounds and are 12 inches in diameter.
  • They live in water but also hang out in trees.
  • They are the world's largest and most powerful snakes. Given the chance, they kill (and eat) cattle and people.
  • Anacondas are short-tempered, so on that next trip through the rain forest, tread lightly. And be polite.

Final word

Olivia Harrison | Widow of former Beatle George Harrison, talking about 'ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro's take on George's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." The song is on Shimabukuro's "Walking Down Rainhill" CD, released yesterday:

"George felt liberated playing the uke and loved it because it made everyone smile. ... Of course, I especially love Jake's version of George's song, and he will always have a fan in England."
