Ben Takahashi to head new restaurant

Chef Ben Takahashi, who has served as right-hand man to two fine Hawai'i chefs, George Mavrothalassitis and Edwin Goto, and who ably captained his own ship at the lamented Seasons Restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea, has been named executive chef at the new Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa.

The hotel is the old Kona Surf, which has undergone a $75 million renovation. It's scheduled to be open on Oct. 1. The restaurants there are Manta Ray Bar & Grill (poolside light dining) and Restaurant Kai (ocean-view seafood restaurant with morning buffets and Sunday brunches).


Try out the the best chili recipes this weekend

Russell Siu's Kaka'ako Kitchen at Ward Centre is sponsoring another in a series of cooking competitions this weekend, this one a battle between a dozen finalists to see who can make the best chili.

You can taste and decide for yourself at the Chili Recipe Challenge, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

A $10 ticket entitles you to sample the entries and includes two Heineken beers or two fountain drinks; additional drinks are $1 each. The event benefits organizations that help prevent child abuse. Last month's barbecue contest raised $1,800 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.


Bobby's Bistro reopens

New owner Danny Ledoux has reopened Bobby's Bistro at Ko'olau Center in Kane'ohe with an international menu (Thai, Italian and Russian), tea and coffee afternoons and an Internet cafe, wide-screen TV and "love connection" sofa, where you can record a personal ad. ...

The Sheraton Moana Surfrider is celebrating Kariyushi Matsuri, an Okinawan seven-course dinner, with recipes from chef Masaru "Steve" Yamada of Izakaya Hatsune-ya. The special menu will be served alongside standard Banyan Veranda fare through Sunday. Reservations: 931-8383.
