Retired band director honored

The American School Band Directors Association recently presented the Edwin Franko Goldman Award to Lloyd Nakahara at its annual convention in St. Louis, Mo.

Nakahara, of Mililani, is a retired band director who taught at Nanakuli High and Intermediate, 'Aiea High and 'Aiea Intermediate.



Forgiveness Day nominates heroes

Coordinators of Hawai'i International Forgiveness Day have announced nominees for the 2004 Hawai'i Forgiveness Heroes award. They are: the 442nd Battalion & 100th Regimental Combat Team for rising above racism and serving their country with devotion and valor; Ricky Hirakawa, who comforted his brother's suspected murderer during his trial; Steve Backman and Chris Loukas, a drunk driver and his victim who found friendship; Dr. Greg Chow, an orthopedic surgeon who joined the Army Reserve and deployed to Iraq to attend to the medical needs of Iraqis and Americans alike; Amy Mizuno, who has demonstrated a forgiving spirit in spite of her World War II internment.

The late Dr. Jerry Chang, former vice president of the East-West Center, will be honored for his contribution toward peace and forgiveness.



UH doctoral students awarded

University of Hawai'i at Manoa doctoral students Heather McMillen and My Lien Nguyen recently received top awards at the ninth International Congress for Ethnobiology held recently in England.

McMillen, a doctoral candidate in anthropology, received the Richard E. Schultes Research Award. She has been researching ethnobotanical systems in Africa.

Nguyen, a doctoral candidate in botany, received the Edmund H. Fulling Award for the best oral paper that contributes to the development of the field of economic botany.



Professor wins service award

Edward Shultz, professor of history and director of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Center for Korean Studies, was awarded the 2004 Robert W. Clopton Award for outstanding community service. The award recognizes a Manoa faculty member who has improved the community through intellectual leadership and academic expertise.

Under Shultz's six-year leadership, the Center for Korean Studies has become a vibrant and dynamic academic center.

Shultz also played an important role in the planning and execution of events associated with the 100th anniversary of Korean immigration to the United States.



2 recognized for UH work

The University of Hawai'i has recognized Wendy Medeiros, a clerk-typist at UH Center, West Hawai'i, and Marilyn Ito-Won, an associate professor and counselor at Honolulu Community College, for outstanding work.

Medeiros received the Chancellors Award for Outstanding Service. With the center since 1995, she has been praised for her outstanding work performance, service and leadership.

Ito-Won received the Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Vocational Education. She was praised for being responsive, reliable and possessing a high standard of professionalism.
