"Tom Fargo is widely respected and admired in both the military and civilian communities in Hawai'i," Robert Clarke, chairman, president and chief executive of HEI, said in a statement. "His leadership and experience will be a great addition to both the HEI and HECO boards."

Navy Capt. John Singley, a spokesman for Pacific Command in Hawai'i, said the admiral is "deeply honored by the announcement ... and appreciates the trust and confidence placed in him."

Fargo, 56, has been the Pacific commander since May 2002. He directs Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force operations from the U.S. West Coast to the East Coast of Africa.

In November, he will be replaced by Air Force Gen. Gregory S. Martin.
