Drivers in fatal crashes identified

Advertiser Staff

A man who died Wednesday after his van struck a concrete pillar on Nimitz Highway near Lagoon Drive has been identified by the city medical examiner's office as Apolinar Ulgaran, 71, of 'Aiea.

Traffic investigators said Ulgaran was driving a 1993 Chevy van west on Nimitz at about 5:25 a.m. when his vehicle sideswiped a Honda that was waiting to turn onto Lagoon Drive.

The van continued through the intersection and hit the pillar on the makai side of Nimitz.

Ulgaran was pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner's office also identified Lincoln Howe, 71, as the driver who died of injuries received Tuesday night when his car slammed into a wall in the parking garage at the Waikiki Landmark condominium, 1888 Kalakaua Ave.

Police believe alcohol and speeding were factors in Howe's death.
