No. 5 Mililani beats 'Aiea, 34-13

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

MILILANI — Defending O'ahu Interscholastic Association West champion Mililani was no gracious host in welcoming 'Aiea to the Red Conference in a 34-13 win last night.

'Aiea running back Teavaiki Vaa escaped the grasp of Mililani defensive lineman Jon Rulloda and broke away for extra yardage in the first quarter of last night's game. Mililani defeated 'Aiea, 34-13.

The Trojans (1-0 West, 2-0 overall), ranked fifth in The Advertiser Top 10, showed why they were the preseason favorites to repeat by shutting down one of the most prolific offenses last year in the No. 10 Na Ali'i (0-1, 1-1), who earned a promotion to the Red after winning the White title.

"Our defense is our strong point," Mililani coach James Millwood said. "We have seven returnees. We're going to have to ride them all the way."

The Trojans contained 'Aiea quarterback Kali Kuia to 14 of 21 for 50 yards; one of his passes was intercepted by safety Justin Morris.

Mililani's secondary played a strong man coverage, minimizing damage by Kuia.

"Our DBs (defensive backs) worked real hard," said Trojans linebacker Aaron Pooloa, who was a defensive back last year. "We knew they had a good quarterback."

Offensively, once the Trojans figured out how to neutralize 'Aiea defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea, who registered five tackles for lost yardage, they controlled the ball long enough to keep 'Aiea off the field. Mililani rushed for 217 yards.

Running back/slot back Kekoa Perbera did the most damage with 81 yards on nine carries with touchdown runs of 38 and 16 yards. His first came in the second quarter on a trap from his slot position; the second came on a straight dive in the third quarter.

Running back Jordan Apduhan added a 16-yard run late in the third quarter that gave Mililani a commanding 34-7 lead.

Meanwhile, 'Aiea thought it had a game just before the half. Trailing 13-0, defensive end Roland Foumai returned a fumble 51 yards with 38 seconds left in the half to pull Na Ali'i to 13-7.

But Jon Santos silenced the 'Aiea fans 13 second later when he returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown to give the Trojans a 20-7 lead at the half.

'Aiea's other score came early in the fourth quarter when R.J. Kiesel-Kauhane blocked a punt and returned the ball four yards for a touchdown to make it 34-13.

Na Ali'i's problem was penalties. They were flagged 12 times for 102 yards.

"We just self-destructed," 'Aiea coach Wendell Say said of the penalties. "Take nothing away from Mililani; they were well-prepared. We still have a long way to go. We still have to make corrections. Our execution was poor. Special teams and penalties killed us."
