Police Beat

Stolen checks lead to an arrest

The third time turned out not to be a charm for a man who is suspected of cashing — or trying to cash — forged checks at a Kane'ohe bank.

Police said the man, 48, cashed the first check drawn on a construction company's account about 11 a.m. Monday and cashed a second check two hours later. The bank later determined that the checks had been reported stolen by the account holder.

The man returned to the bank yesterday and tried to cash a third check.

Police were called and the man was arrested for suspicion of forgery and theft.

Foiled shopper may face charges

Police arrested a 24-year-old man about 2 a.m. yesterday at the Wal-Mart store in Waipahu after a cashier noticed he was trying to buy $1,800 worth of merchandise with a credit card that had a woman's name on it.

The cashier told police that when she questioned the man about the card, he told her it belonged to his mother and that he had permission to use it.

The owner of the card, a 41-year-old woman, was contacted and said her purse, which had contained the credit card, had been stolen earlier.

Police were called to the store and arrested the man for suspicion of fraudulent use of a credit card.

Escapee faces car-theft charge

A man who was the subject of a police manhunt after he escaped from a police officer's car in the Punchbowl area last month was arrested at Halawa prison yesterday and charged with stealing a car Oct. 26 in Kailua.

Kristopher Kealoha, 28, who was wanted for escape and parole violation, was captured Nov. 8 after he crashed his car at the federal building and broke a door there.

Kealoha, also known as Eric Pawai, had been on the run since Nov. 2 after climbing out of a police car window while he was being taken to the main police station on South Beretania Street. Police had arrested him earlier that day near the Kina'u Street exit ramp on the H-1 Freeway on a parole-revocation warrant.

The car theft charge stems from an incident in which police attempted to stop a car in Kailua that had been reported stolen by a Honolulu woman. Police said the driver in that case refused to comply with instructions to pull over and was involved in several collisions before he was able to elude the officers who were pursuing him.

Third arrest in stolen-fruit case

Police have arrested a third suspect in connection with the theft of more than 500 pineapples Nov. 21 from a Del Monte Corp. field in Kunia.

Two other men were arrested previously.

Police said an anonymous tip led to the arrest of the third man, 48, on suspicion of second-degree theft. Police reported finding the man sleeping in a car.

Del Monte executives told police earlier that pineapples have been disappearing from company fields three or four times a week for the past year.
