ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Getting organized for holidays

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Jenny Pemberton, owner of List Lovers in Ashland, Ky., offers week-by-week tips for staying organized during the holidays:

This week

  • Decorate inside your home and get everyone involved in trimming the tree, hanging garland and checking lights.
  • Take inventory of holiday items including stamps, envelopes, party goods and baking supplies.
  • Establish a "wrapping station" in a little-used area of your house. Stock it with tape, scissors, wrapping paper and ribbon.

Next week

  • Plan the holiday menu.
  • Mail holiday cards or packages.
  • Decide on or shop for a special holiday outfit.

Week before Christmas

  • Purchase menu items.
  • Prepare foods that can be frozen in advance, including cookies, soups and pies.
  • Finish holiday shopping.

Week of Christmas

  • Finalize holiday plans.
  • Make sure all gifts are wrapped, food is ready to eat.

The big day

  • Set the table.
  • Prepare food.

After the holiday

  • Clean again.
  • Put away dishes and gifts.
  • Pack similar items together.
  • Label boxes for next year.

Decks of cards with that holiday spirit

Playing the holidays with a full deck? With Hanukkah on Dec. 7 and Christmas weeks after that, the deck of "52 Activities for Jewish Holidays" and "52 Christmas Activities" cards might be just the ticket to get everyone in the spirit.

Each card lists an activity, from making a fruity menorah to assembling a Special Santa care package for a family in need.

At $6.95 per pack (plus shipping and handling), they're available online at www.chroniclebooks.com or (800) 722-6657.

Bids are pouring in for The Advertiser's fund-raiser

The Advertiser's Creations for a Cause, online bidding for holiday ornaments, is off to a quick start. By yesterday morning, the six ornament packages and tree — all donated and designed by local artists — had raised more than $470 for the Advertiser Christmas Fund. The bidding continues through 1 p.m. Dec. 7, with the highest bidders notified Dec. 8.

"Dreams," (pictured) designed by master feather artist Mary Lou Kekuewa and her daughter, Paulette Kahalepuna, has attracted the highest bid so far at $120. The duo used parrot feathers to create this miniature lei hulu. Check out the ornaments and the bidding, or put in a bid yourself.
